(Preface as a warning….this is long and dumb, but plaguing me so I’m posting it anyway)
About 7 years ago, I was in the process of selecting and purchasing my home – and needed a place to stay during the process. Some relatives offered their home as an alternative because it was vacant (as they had moved and were in the process of selling it), so I thought it was a great idea and moved in.
I knew these relatives were not my type of “clean”, but I didn’t realize they lived like a pack of mud-loving swine. The flooring in this house was absolutely filthy in a way I had never experienced – as my parents are absolutely ridiculous about cleanliness (sorry Mom and Dad, but you know it’s true). I was completely disgusted by their floors, which I religiously scrubbed, mopped, vacuumed, etc, but to no avail. The dirt present had accumulated over the 20+ years of them living in the home and there was no hope for me fixing it in the brief few months I was living there. The bottoms of my feet were consistently a disgusting black from walking around the house as a normal person would.
And thus my barefoot aversion was born.
Ever since, I have not been able to handle being barefoot. Anywhere, anytime. The only time I can handle having my feet bare is in the shower – and even then, I have been known to shower in flipflops if I am not satisfied with the cleanliness of the shower (whether it’s mine or someone elses). I notice it most – and struggle most – when I am shopping for clothes and shoes. It takes quite a bit of energy to make sure my bare feet never touch the floor in this situation. I have excellent cleaning people who are diligent in cleaning my floors, so it’s not that I believe my floors are dirty – I simply can’t get past the feeling of texture beneath my feet.
Honestly, try to have the bottom of your feet continuously covered for an entire week and you’ll see it takes some energy and planning. I am a lunatic with an issue. And it’s getting worse because not only do I have a complete meltdown if my bare feet touch flooring, but I am starting to have major angst about OTHER PEOPLE being barefoot too. This is getting stupid. How to solve the issue?
