Dinner with grandpa

On Sunday, my mom and I made dinner - and table conversation with my grandpa (who has no filter anymore) went as follows.....

Grandpa: What's this?
Me: It's peas and bacon (which wasn't really true - it was peas and prosciutto, which is a bacon-like meat + finely chopped mint leaves + diced/sauteed red onion.....DELICIOUS).
Grandpa: I don't like it. (although he still had not tried any of it to this point)
Me: Well, you like peas and you like bacon so I'll bet if you tried a bite, you would like it.
Grandpa: No I won't.
Me: Do you like the noodles?
Grandpa: No.
Me: You should try them - the sauce is good.
Grandpa: No.
Me: Do you like the fresh fruit? I think it's delicious. (I'm clearly trying to sell the meal for all its worth now)
Grandpa: No.
Me: Okay. (deflated)
Grandpa: Chicken's good.
Me: Thanks.

So of the beautiful, balanced delicious meal, he ate chicken. Just chicken. Wouldn't even let his fork touch the other food. It is like eating with a child, because you want to say, "No, you need to at least try it", except this is a grown man who can make his own decisions, not a child, so I've got nothing except to shrug my shoulders.....and of course throw away yummy food we worked hard to make.

Then the minute dinner was over, he asked, "Is it time for ice cream?". It's so innocent and childlike - and maddening because if he was a child, you could say, "Please at least try one bite of each item in order to have dessert" or something such as that. Instead, we scooped up the ice cream because heaven knows there were not enough calories in the chicken to sustain him and he's already losing far too much weight with this new picky food behavior.

Thanksgiving could be interesting.....

  2. You're kind - I don't know if it's kindness or simply unsure how to help them feel a sense of normalcy again. This is so unusual....life just changes in a flash. Makes me grateful for the individual moments with my parents now because someday this will be them too. Isn't life interesting....
