The art of setting someone up

So one of my dear friends decided to set me up with guy he knows from work. While this sounds like a sweet offer, I am not a happy chick.

My friend is a sweetheart and overly flattering so of course he said kind things about me. Sure, friends do that, but a real friend would understand the art of setting someone up. It's called "Setting Low Expectations". Set the lowest expectations possible for your friend to ask your other friend out. Seriously - just say enough to get them both to consent to go out. Then when they go out, they are both going into it with lower expectations that necessary and they can be pleasantly surprised.

Case and point, my friend has told this boy (okay, just to clarify, he's actually a man, but that's simply not my vernacular) his perception of me. While that's very kind and I appreciate it (I certainly don't want to seem ungrateful), it's his perception and it's overly generous. So he's given this poor fella a description of me that is skewed....if/when we meet up, you know he'll be thinking, "Uh, didn't match the description". Good grief!

This is not some ridiculous "Sarah needs more confidence" post....it's about the art of setting someone up. I have asked Cory to describe me as follows in future "set up" situations:
- I have a wooden leg
- I'm only missing "a few" teeth
- My eyes cross if I think too hard
- I dropped out after 8th grade
- I'm often mute

Then, if he still chooses to ask me out, when he sees/meets me and I have have two fully functioning legs, all of my teeth, can think/speak relatively well, and more than a junior high education level, he'll be pleasantly surprised.

It's all about expectations.

  2. Whatever! I think very highly of you, and would be one of those who "talk you up" just in a simple explaination. Wooden leg and crossed eyes, hardly.
