A visit to the George - and pigs

I was in St. George for work starting Thursday morning and came back Saturday evening. It was beautiful weather (80's and sunny); the educational activity I went to sponsor was not as successful as I would have liked (we were broadcasting it live, but dropped the feed a handful of times).

The educational activity included didactic lectures the first day (which was when we had trouble with the online broadcast), and then hands-on workshops the second day. It was about wound care.....which is icky. Lots of gruesome photos and at-length discussions about amputations, necrotizing fasciitis (this is basically where your skin sluffs off due to a flesh-eating bacteria), and victims with horrible full-thickness burns. Do you remember the part in the recent "Batman" that shows how Two-Face looks in the hospital? Half of his face is burned off, with just his eyeball looking around.....um, yeah, I saw real patient photos like that this weekend. Let's just say that the "Batman" version looks VERY realistic.

On Saturday, we had hands-on workshops, including skin grafting and generation. They wanted the participants to practice these techniques.....on pigs feet. I know this doesn't look real, but I can assure you (because I touched it), this is a real pig's foot. This was one of the stations.....
Anyway.....I am back home now and ready for playoff basketball - although apparently the Jazz aren't, as evidenced by their fall apart last night. Come on guys....pull it together tomorrow night. I'm watching the Lakers/OKC debacle right now and reminding myself further why I hate the Lakers. I might write a letter to Ron Artest to tell him how much I loathe him.

  1. The pigs feet are gross! I can't believe you were brave enough to touch them...I have touched a fair share of sick stuff in my life, but never dead, skin sluffing off, feet of swine!

You aren't kidding that the Jazz didn't show up ready to play a play off game. I actually fell to sleep almost 3 minutes before it was over.

Glad you are back safely from St George. :)
